About Ash and District Photo Club

The Ash & District Photo Club is a self-help group aimed mainly at retired people who have an interest in any aspect of photography. Members from beginners to those with considerable experience are welcome. We meet monthly, during the afternoon, and divide our meeting into a few parts including a “how to do it” subject, a review of members pictures on a chosen theme and time for problems, gossip and show off.

For our “how to do it” subjects members are encouraged to give a short, informal talk on a subject in which they have an interest. Care is taken to balance these subjects across the range of experience in the club.

Each month we choose a subject for a picture review. Members are encouraged to take up to three photos of a subject chosen by the group at the previous meeting. At the following meeting the club will look at the results and talk about any issues or ideas that were found or used. These pictures do not have to be perfect. This is not a competition and presenting one that went wrong could provide as much useful knowledge to the group as a perfect one. Last year we certainly had fun looking at our pictures on subjects that included; Still Life, Round, Mystery Object or Place, Black and White, and Movement.

Once a year we hold a competition

We meet on the third Thursday of each month from 2-4pm in the rear hall at The Victoria Hall, Ash Hill Road Ash, GU12 5DN. We are a very friendly group and would love to welcome some new members. Please get in touch if you would like more information.

Ash Photo Club October 2017 Meeting

The photo club's new year got off to a great start yesterday. Glyn's talk and demonstration about abstract photography was well received and we enjoyed sharing our attempts to create a postcard for Ash. The image above was taken by Dave Thomas

The next meeting will be on Thursday October 19th when we will enjoy photos of diagonals taken by the members; maybe even the odd abstract diagonal. We will also share ideas for accessories to help capture that perfect image

New members always welcome. Please get in touch.

At the July meeting we will enjoy all the photos we took on our outing to Aldershot in June. The challenge was thrown down to all members of the group to find and photograph something that no-one else spotted. We will see.

As usual our July meeting is about planning for the next academic year's meetings. We do not meet in August and already have December booked for a social. March for the annual competition and June for the outing but there are seven other meetings to decide on.

Please get in touch if you would like to come and visit the group.

June's photo club meeting with be our annual outing and we are going to explore the older parts of Aldershot. Basing ourselves round Manor Park we will visit St Michael's Church, the Heroes Garden and the park. We hope to finish up with a walk up to the cannon on Redan Redoubt.

Meet at the entrance to St Michael's Church on Church Hill

May's meeting produced some wonderful pictures. Our main subject was fauna and there was a variety of fauna to admire, including several robins and squirrels. The talk was about how to create panoramas and some of the members brought examples they had made earlier.

Ash Photo Club May 2017

The next meeting of the club will be on Thursday May 18th at 2pm at The Victoria Hall, Ash Hill Road, Ash. We meet in the rear hall which is accessed through the door at the back of the car park. The talk will be about creating panoramas by stitching together a set of photos.

The April meeting gave us lots of ideas for using Photoshop Elements to improve our photos. The monthly photo subject was 'A Time of Day' which proved quite tricky. We saw quite a few clocks and sundials as well as plates of cakes to show teatime. The photo above was taken by Jill Townshend at dusk.

April 2017 Meeting

The next meeting of the club will be on Thursday April 20th at 2pm at The Victoria Hall, Ash Hill Road, Ash. We meet in the rear hall which is accessed through the door at the back of the car park. The talk will be about using Photoshop Elements and members are invited to submit up to three photographs to share on the subject 'Time of Day'.

The March meeting was a good one with Glyn revealing the results of the annual photo competition. Sixteen people entered in three categories; A Splash of Colour, A Sign and Open. A huge variety of fantastic photos were entered and it was very difficult to choose. However, the winning photos are above. "Cooling Chillies" and "Woody" won first prize in the Open and Splash of Colour catergories for Kerry Turner, while Bob Whitborn's picture of this shop with a wondeful name won in the 'Signs' category.

Ash Photo Club March Meeting

The next meeting of the club will be on Thursday March16th at 2pm at The Victoria Hall, Ash Hill Road, Ash. We meet in the rear hall which is accessed through the door at the back of the car park. There is no talk this month as this will be the judging of the annual photo competition. Photos can be submitted in three classes - Signs, A Splash of Colour and Open.

At our February meeting the members enjoyed a talk about how to store, tag and generally organise photos on the computer. There were gasps when Glyn, who was giving the talk, admitted to having 65000+ photos. No wonder he needs organising!

After that a great selection of black and white photos were shown. Everyone had been keen to try out some of the techniques they had learnt at the January meeting and some of the results were stunning. We all jumped as this fabulous image of an ostrich appeared on the screen. It was taken by Peter Barker at Birdworld last year.

New members of all abilities are very welcome. Contact Jane or Glyn Morgan for more details.

February 2017 Meeting

The next meeting of the club will be on Thursday February 16th at 2pm at The Victoria Hall, Ash Hill Road, Ash at 2pm. We meet in the rear hall which is accessed through the door at the back of the car park. The talk will be about storing photos and the photo subject is black and white. New members of all abilities are very welcome. Contact Jane or Glyn Morgan for more details.

The January meeting was a great success with a talk about how to take photos in black and white but also how to convert colour photos. The various methods of doing this were shown and the members were surprised to find out how different techniques produce very different results.

We also looked at members' photos on the topic of 'Not Fond Of'. This proved to be tricky as most of us do not take photos of things we do not like. Some of the topics proved controversial and some were fun. Graffiti, fly tipping and rubbish generally were a common theme as shown by this photo taken by Peter Francis in a local car park.

January 2017

The January meeting of the photo club will take place on Thursday January 19th at 2pm at The Victoria Hall, Ash Hill Road, Ash.
Glyn will be talking about black and white photography with an emphasis on how to put together an effective photo.
Our photo subject for the month is 'Not fond of'. This has proved quite difficult as most of us do not take photos of things we don't like. It will be interesting to see what the members come up with.
Last month the subject was food and drink. which was quite appropriate as we had some nibbles and soft drinks during the meeting.
John Gove made a Victoria Sponge and then photographed it. A man of many talents!

December Meeting

The December meeting of the photo club will take place at The Victoria Hall, Ash Hill Road on Thursday 15th at 2pm. We meet in the rear hall through the door at the back of the car park.

Our theme for the month is 'Show and Tell'. It is really a social afternoon with a few nibbles and drinks and a chance for everyone to share their best photos of the year.

I will show one of my slide shows - probably one of the shorter ones! I belong to a group of people - not connected with this group - who take a photo every day. We have a list of prompts and all come up with a photo to illustrate that subject. I am writing this on December 7th and the subject today is 'handle'. Sometimes the challenge is just making the photo interesting! At the end of each month, I make my photos into a slide show, add a piece of suitable music and keep them.

We will also be looking at the group's photos of food and drink, which was our subject for the last month. I guess there is plenty of that about at the moment.

We always welcome new members so please get in touch if you would like to come and see us. You are more than welcome to visit and see if you like us.

Above is the photo I took on the day when the prompt was 'smile'. I love this soldier who lives in Ash Museum and who has the most enigmatic smile.
